The Choquequirao Trek 5 Days 4 Nights is a slow-paced trekking experience designed for travelers who want to reach Choquequirao comfortably while fully enjoying the journey. The itinerary includes two days hiking to Choquequirao, one full day exploring the archaeological site, and two relaxed days returning, allowing proper acclimatization and time to connect with nature.

Known as the Lost Inca City and the sister site of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is reached through the spectacular Apurímac Canyon. All services along the trek — meals, campsites, mule support, and logistics — are provided by local families, creating an authentic, sustainable experience that directly supports the communities of the region.

Itinerary

DAY 1Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chikiska

This day the meeting point in the city of Cusco in group service is in the regocijo square that is next to the main square between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. if is a private service  the pick up is in the hotel .

Our transport will take us for about 4 hours and a half all the way de Capuliyoc where is the beginning of the trek

If you leave Abancay, the meeting point is coordinated internally at approximately 9 am and them we go to Cachora distrit where we meet with the people that come from Cusco.

After that we will continue in the car to Capuliyoc where we can enjoy our lunch with a view of the Apurimac Canyon and the snowy Padreyoc. Then we will begin our adventure, we start to descend for about 3 hours approx. Passing through the viewpoints of Cocamasana to Chikiska, where we will have our dinner and spend the night there in a rural lodging that has rooms with double or matrimonial beds.

SUMMARY FOR DAY 01:

  • Included Meals:  Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Local lodges usually 2 or 3 people per room depending on the accommodation.
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Hiking Distance: 8 kilometers downhill
  • Estimated Trekking Duration: 3 hours
  • Campsite Elevation: We start at 2900 meters above sea level and descended to 1850 meters above sea level.
  • Weather Forecast: Expect We expect warm climates since it is a warm valley, rain between the months of December to March approx.
  • Additional Note: This day serves as a period of training and preparation. It is ideal for acclimatizing in anticipation of Day 02

NOT INCLUDED:

  • Entrance ticket. On this day, at the lunch location, the client directly pays his entrance ticket, which costs 60 soles for adults and 30 soles for students (student ticket with a student ID and a maximum of 25 years old). The money is paid in cash.
  • Water,  to take with you is not included so you have 3 options:
    You can buy bottled water at each campsite.
    You can filter your water if you have travel water filters.
    You can purify the water with water purification tablets sold in pharmacies in Cusco
  • Hot Shower and Wifi service they charge extra (10 soles Each).

DAY 2Chikiska - Marampata

We  start the day early, after breakfast we will continue descending for 1 hour to the Apurímac River, a place called Playa Rosalina, crossing the river we start to climb to Santa Rosa for an hour and a half to 2 hours approx. This part the physical effort is strong and we try to climb when is still shadow without the sun.

After a short break we will continue climbing for another  3  hours and a half  aprox. to the town of Marampata, where we  have lunch and in the afternoon free time  to rest. Marampata is a nice place town to see the sun set if we are luky.

After climbing 1500 masl we rest the rest of the day, in the same place is our dinner and hostal

SUMMARY FOR DAY 02

  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Local lodges usually 2 or 3 people per room depending on the accommodation.
  • Difficulty Level: Challenging
  • Altitude: We started at 1850 meters above sea level, went down to 1450 meters above sea level and then went up to 2900 meters above sea level.
  • Hiking Distance: 2 km downhill and 7 km uphill total 9 km
  • Estimated Trekking Duration: 1 hour downhill , 5 hours uphill.
  • Camping Altitude: 2,900 meters
  • Weather Forecast: Warm at the beginning of the day and a little cool at the end of the day
  • Additional Note: Day 02 is difficult day, Because after 2 km downhill (1 hour) there are 7 km uphill and 1500 meters of elevation , good physical condition is required.

DAY 3Marampata - Choquequirao - MArampata

DAY 03: Full Day Exploration of Choquequirao – Return to Marampata

This is one of the most important days of the trek, as we dedicate the entire day to exploring the Choquequirao Archaeological Park, one of the largest and most impressive Inca sites in Peru.

After an early breakfast, we begin a relaxed hike of approximately 2 hours (4 km) from Marampata to Choquequirao, arriving between 7:00 and 8:00 am. Thanks to the slow-paced itinerary, we have ample time to explore the main sectors of the site, including plazas, temples, ceremonial terraces, and panoramic viewpoints. Choquequirao is considered even larger than Machu Picchu, and its remote location makes the visit especially rewarding.

At midday, our muleteer brings a box lunch, which we enjoy inside the archaeological complex while taking in the surrounding scenery. After lunch, we continue exploring Choquequirao at a comfortable pace, allowing time for photos, rest, and deeper interpretation with the guide.

In the afternoon, we begin our return hike back to Marampata, where we enjoy dinner and spend the night, surrounded by peaceful mountain views and Andean landscapes.

  • Accommodation: Local lodges or camps in Marampata (2–3 people per room/tent, depending on availability)

  • Difficulty Level: Challenging

    • Marampata: 2,900 m

    • Choquequirao: 3,000 m

  • Hiking Distance:

    • 4 km Marampata → Choquequirao

    • Approximately 3 km inside the archaeological site

    • 4 km return to Marampata

    • Total: Approx. 11 km

  • Estimated Trekking Duration:

    • Start: approx. 5:30 am

    • Finish: approx. 4:30–5:00 pm

    • Total hiking and guided exploration: 7–8 hours, including breaks

  • Camping Altitude: 2,900 meters

  • Weather: Cool in the early morning, warmer during the afternoon

  • Additional Note: Although this is a long and rewarding day, the route has gentle gradients, allowing a steady and comfortable pace throughout the visit.

DAY 4MArampata - Chikiska - Cocamasana

DAY 04: Marampata – Playa Rosalina – Chiquisca – Cocamasana

After an early breakfast in Marampata, we begin our return trek, descending gradually through scenic landscapes toward the Apurímac River. This day is planned at a steady and comfortable pace, allowing time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the impressive views of the canyon.

We descend to Playa Rosalina, where we cross the Apurímac River before continuing the hike uphill to Chiquisca. Here, we stop to enjoy a well-deserved lunch, prepared with the support of local families who manage services along the route.

After lunch in Chiquisca, we continue the afternoon hike along a quieter section of the trail, ascending gradually to the Cocamasana campsite, surrounded by warm weather and Andean vegetation. Upon arrival, we set up camp, enjoy dinner, and rest after a rewarding day on the trail.

All services throughout the day — meals, campsites, and mule support — are provided by local communities, ensuring a responsible and community-based trekking experience.

  • Accommodation: Local campsite in Cocamasana

  • Difficulty Level: Challenging

  • Altitude:

    • Marampata: 2,900 m

    • Playa Rosalina: 1,500 m

    • Chiquisca: 1,900 m

    • Cocamasana: approx. 2,300 m

  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 15 km

  • Estimated Trekking Duration: 7–8 hours, including breaks

  • Camping Altitude: Approx. 2,300 meters

  • Weather: Warm during the day, cooler in the evening

  • Additional Note: This day includes a long descent followed by gradual ascents, but the pace remains relaxed with regular rest stops.

DAY 5DAY 05: Cocamasana – Capuliyoc – Cconoc Hot Springs – Cusco

After breakfast at the campsite in Cocamasana, we begin the final hike of the trek, walking approximately 2 hours uphill to reach Capuliyoc. Along the way, we enjoy the last panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon and the surrounding Andean landscapes.

Upon arrival at Capuliyoc, we say goodbye to our muleteers and trekking team, who have supported us throughout the journey. Tips are appreciated but not obligatory.

From Capuliyoc, we board our private bus and travel to the Cconoc Hot Springs, where we have free time to relax in the natural thermal pools and soothe tired muscles after the trek.

After the hot springs visit, we continue by bus back to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

    We do not provide water for refilling personal bottles. However, we do provide boiled water for hot and cold drinks at each meal.
    For drinking water, you may:

    • Purchase mineral water along the trail (approx. 5–12 PEN for a 2.5-liter bottle), or

    • Bring a water filter or purification tablets to treat mountain water.

  • Internet connection:
    There is no mobile phone signal at most camps. Wi-Fi may be available at some campsites for approximately 10 PEN, depending on availability.

  • Showers and toilets along the trail:

    • Toilets are available at campsites at no cost; local facilities along the trail may charge 1 PEN.

    • Hot showers: approx. 10 PEN

    • Cold showers: Free

  • Tips (optional):
    Tips are not included. Tipping is a common practice in the tourism industry as a way to recognize good service and effort.
    It is not mandatory, but if you are satisfied with the service, you may choose to tip the guide and muleteers at the end of the trek.

  • Travel insurance:
    Travel insurance is not included. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance in your home country, as it can be difficult to obtain in Peru.

  •  

The itinerary of the trip may change due to rain factors and depending of the resistance of the passenger’s walk, changes in the program are subject to extra expenses assumed by the client.

If you rent a horse to ride, it only goes uphill + not downhill (riding a horse downhill has a high risk of accident).

The physical condition of the client has to be of average good since the walk demands a lot of physical effort, this path is one of the most difficult in Peru, difficulty level 4.

✓   If you want a horse to ride for the last day of return,  the price is 250 soles per person , that is coordinated with the group and the guide during the walk.

✓   Entry ticket 60 soles adult (national or foreign), 30 soles student with card (national or foreign).

✓   First Sunday of each month free entry for passengers identified with Peruvian national ID.

✓   You can buy water and rehydration in some camps, but the price will be a little more than normal because all the stores are supplied only with horses.

✓   If you want to save money, you can buy water filter bottles or water purification tablets at pharmacies.

On the trip it is recommended to wear personal clothing only what is necessary for 4 days, very comfortable walking shoes with a good sole so that you do not slip (cut your toenails).

Extra light shoes in case the trekking shoes fail

A pair of polo shirts, a pair of pants, a jacket for the cold, a hat or cap for heat.

Bandanas that cover the face from the wind, dust and heat. (we sell 10 soles).

Swimwear in case we go into the Cconoc thermal water, which is optional.

Personal towels since the camps do not have it.

Very important rain poncho, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, fruits, cookies, water.

Personal medication, bandages, knee rubs since it is a very common problem due to the difficulty of the road.

Obligatory Headlamps or flashlights in case of emergency we  need to  walk at night.

It is recommended to bring portable chargers since the energy in each camp is limited with solar panels and it is difficult to charge cell phones.

Wi-Fi is available in some camps for an extra cost (Chikiska, Marampata and Capuliyoc).

Hot showers in each camp for an extra cost of 10 soles approx depending on the camp.

PRIVATE: Generally it is when the client hires the services of the guide and the muleteer only for them, the guide adapts to the needs of the client, whether with a fast or slow pace.

GROUP: Here the client adapts to the needs of the group and the decisions that can be made wanting to change the program are debated democratically together with the guide and for the good of the group.
